추분: 중국의 추수철과 시대를 초월한 돌

“Autumn Equinox isn’t just about equal day and night—it’s nature’s lesson in balance, a truth that echoes in how stone endures as both a harvest-era building block and a modern luxury material.”
As one of China’s 24 solar terms, the Autumn Equinox (usually September 22–24) marks a pivotal moment: day and night are nearly equal in length, and autumn reaches its midpoint. For ancient Chinese agrarian societies, this was a time of reckoning—harvests of rice, wheat, and fruits were gathered, and the land prepared for winter’s rest. Today, this solar term still resonates as a celebration of balance, abundance, and the cyclical wisdom of nature.

What Makes the Autumn Equinox Unique?

The term “Autumn Equinox” (Qiūfēn in Mandarin) stems from two core observations:
  • Equal Day & Night: Across the globe, daytime and nighttime each last roughly 12 hours on this day. Afterward, nights grow longer in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Harvest & Preparation: It sits at autumn’s midpoint, dividing the season into “early autumn” and “late autumn.” Farmers finish reaping summer crops (like rice) and sow winter wheat, while orchards burst with ripe apples, pears, and persimmons.

Time-Honored Autumn Equinox Traditions

Autumn Equinox customs blend gratitude for harvests with respect for celestial rhythms. Here are key traditions rooted in centuries of Chinese culture:

1. Worshiping the Moon (秋祭月)

Long before the Mid-Autumn Festival became China’s most famous moon celebration, the Autumn Equinox was a time to honor the moon. People offered sacrifices (fruit, mooncakes, or wine) to pray for calm weather and bountiful future harvests. In imperial times, emperors led grand ceremonies at altars; today, families gather to admire the full moon and share stories.

2. Picking “Autumn Vegetables” (吃秋菜)

In southern Guangdong province, villages hold “autumn vegetable” outings. Locals collect liángcài (a wild green vegetable), boil it with fish to make “autumn soup,” and sing: “Drink autumn soup, keep diseases away; eat autumn vegetables, stay healthy year-round.” It’s a rustic way to celebrate nature’s late-summer bounty.

3. Sending “Autumn Ox Scrolls” (送秋牛图)

Artists create scrolls painted with oxen (symbols of farming) and predictions for the coming year’s weather and harvests. These “Autumn Ox Scrolls” are given to farmers, who believe they’ll bring good luck to their fields.

4. “Sticking Sparrow’s Mouths” (粘雀子嘴)

To protect newly sown winter wheat from sparrows, farmers make glutinous rice balls, place them on fields, and say: “Sparrows, eat the sweet balls—leave my wheat alone!” The sticky rice “glues” sparrows’ beaks, harmlessly deterring them from crops.

Autumn Equinox and Stone: A Harmony of Permanence

At HRST Stone, we see a profound link between the Autumn Equinox and our craft: both honor “endurance through change.”
The Equinox celebrates harvest—the peak of nature’s yearly cycle—while stone is nature’s own “harvest” of time. Granite, marble, and quartzite form over millions of years, then become part of buildings that stand for decades (or centuries). Just as the Equinox balances day and night, stone balances beauty and durability in spaces like:
  • Luxury hotel lobbies in Europe, where marble floors reflect centuries of architectural heritage.
  • South American estates, where quartzite countertops endure tropical heat while mirroring autumn’s rich, earthy tones.
  • North African resorts, where sandstone walls blend with desert landscapes, lasting through years of sun and wind.
Stone, like the Autumn Equinox, reminds us that great design isn’t temporary. It’s a commitment to materials that age gracefully—just as autumn’s harvest sustains communities through winter, stone sustains spaces through generations.

Why This Matters for Global Designers

For designers, project managers, and homeowners, the Autumn Equinox’s ethos is clear: balance and longevity matter. When you choose stone for a project, you’re choosing a material aligned with nature’s cycles—durable enough for daily use, beautiful enough to evoke autumn’s richness, and timeless enough to outlast trends.
HRST Stone works with clients worldwide to translate this ethos into reality. Whether you’re crafting a London townhouse with limestone or a São Paulo villa with travertine, we provide one-stop solutions—from sourcing ethically mined stone to custom fabrication and delivery.

Your Next Step: Build With Seasonal Wisdom

As the old Chinese saying goes: “秋分一到,谷仓满绕” (“When Autumn Equinox arrives, barns overflow with grain”). Let your project overflow with the lasting quality of stone.
“Autumn Equinox gives us balance; stone gives us legacy—together, they make spaces that feel both rooted in nature and built for eternity.”
