or<\/li>\n<li>the position in which the slab is being displayed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That does not mean a visual concern should be ignored.<\/p>\n<p>It means it should be recorded accurately:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cApparent surface movement observed under this viewing condition.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That statement is very different from:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe slab exceeds the flatness tolerance.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The second statement requires a defined requirement and comparable measurement evidence.<\/p>\n<h2>Do Not Use a Photograph as a Flatness Gauge<\/h2>\n<p>Photographs are useful for documenting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>which slab was reviewed;<\/li>\n<li>where a concern was noticed;<\/li>\n<li>how the slab was positioned;<\/li>\n<li>the visible surface and finish;<\/li>\n<li>support conditions that can be seen;<\/li>\n<li>lighting and viewing direction; and<\/li>\n<li>the general inspection context.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But a photograph alone does not establish a dimensional deviation.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially important when a polished surface reflects long ceiling lights or windows. A curved-looking reflection may justify a closer review, but the image itself should not be converted into an assumed millimetre value.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-left: 5px solid #D4A76A; padding: 15px 18px; margin: 22px 0;\"><strong>Evidence Rule<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 8px 0 0 0;\">Use photographs to locate and document a visual concern. Use the agreed measurement method to quantify a dimensional condition. and<\/li>\n<li>whether the position changed between inspections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This does not mean that a general article should prescribe one universal support arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>It means the measurement record should state the condition under which the result was obtained.<\/p>\n<h2>Define What \u201cFlatness\u201d Means for the Actual Inspection<\/h2>\n<p>The word <em>flatness<\/em> should not be used as though every project automatically shares one measurement procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Before measurement, identify the applicable project or technical requirement.<\/p>\n<p>A controlled instruction should define, where relevant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what object is being measured;<\/li>\n<li>the applicable reference or measurement method;<\/li>\n<li>the measuring equipment;<\/li>\n<li>the reference geometry or span;<\/li>\n<li>the support condition;<\/li>\n<li>measurement locations;<\/li>\n<li>sampling requirements;<\/li>\n<li>reporting units;<\/li>\n<li>production stage; and<\/li>\n<li>acceptance criteria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The applicable numerical limit should come from the project specification, purchase agreement, applicable method or standard, or responsible technical party\u2014not from a generic online article.<\/p>\n<h2>Flatness Is Not the Same as Thickness<\/h2>\n<p>This distinction is especially important in Natural Quartzite inspection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thickness<\/strong> describes the distance between the two relevant stone surfaces at a measurement location.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flatness<\/strong> addresses a different geometric question: how the relevant surface relates to the defined reference used by the applicable inspection method.<\/p>\n<p>A slab or component can therefore present:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>relatively consistent thickness but a separate flatness concern;<\/li>\n<li>thickness variation without the same type of flatness issue;
