padding: 18px 20px; margin: 22px 0 28px 0;\"><strong>Hardness Observation \u2260 Geological Classification<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 10px 0 0 0;\">A material behaving as relatively hard at one test location does not, by that observation alone, establish the complete mineral composition, texture, geological history, or rock classification of the slab.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Natural Quartzite is associated with quartz-rich metamorphic rock, but a buyer should not turn that general geological relationship into a shortcut such as:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt resisted this scratch, therefore it must be Quartzite.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That conclusion asks a simple field observation to answer a much broader identification question.<\/p>\n<h2>The Mohs Scale Is Useful\u2014but Often Misused<\/h2>\n<p>Hardness discussions frequently refer to the Mohs scale.<\/p>\n<p>The Mohs scale is useful for comparing the relative scratch hardness of minerals. It does not mean that every polished natural-stone slab can be reliably classified by scratching it once with a common object.<\/p>\n<p>A slab is a rock, not a single ideal mineral crystal.<\/p>\n<p>Natural stone can contain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>different mineral constituents;<\/li>\n<li>accessory minerals;<\/li>\n<li>veins or bands;<\/li>\n<li>altered zones;<\/li>\n<li>filled or repaired areas;<\/li>\n<li>surface treatments; and<\/li>\n<li>natural variation across the slab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So even when hardness is relevant, the buyer still needs to understand exactly what was tested.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Informal Scratch Demonstrations Can Be Misleading<\/h2>\n<div style=\"display: grid; and<\/li>\n<li>fractures or microfractures observed in the examined section.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is much closer to the geological identification question than an improvised surface scratch demonstration.<\/p>\n<h2>But a Petrographic Report Also Has Limits<\/h2>\n<p>Replacing \u201cscratch test proves everything\u201d with \u201cpetrographic report proves everything\u201d would create another problem.<\/p>\n<p>A petrographic report describes the <strong>sample examined<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It does not automatically prove that every slab sold under the same commercial name has identical:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>mineral proportions;<\/li>\n<li>visual character;<\/li>\n<li>fracture distribution;<\/li>\n<li>accessory minerals;<\/li>\n<li>physical properties;
