What is the difference between marble and granite

For centuries, marble and granite have been two of the most popular and widely used building materials in the world. While the two materials share some striking similarities, there are also clear differences between the two, including properties, uses, and cost considerations.

Form different

Natural marble is a metamorphic rock formed by the original rock in the crust through high temperature and high pressure in the crust.

Natural granite is igneous rock, also called acid crystalline plutonic rock, which is the most widely distributed rock among igneous rocks.

The main ingredients are different

Granite: Mainly composed of quartz, feldspar and mica. Among them, the feldspar content is 40%~60%, and the quartz content is 20%~40%. Its color depends on the type and quantity of the ingredients.
Marble: It is mainly composed of calcite, limestone, serpentine and dolomite, and its main component is calcium carbonate, accounting for more than 50%. Others include magnesium carbonate, calcium oxide, manganese oxide and silicon dioxide.

The difference between the characteristics of the two stones

Both marble and granite have a natural beauty that makes them equally attractive for architecture. However, the visible characteristics of marble and granite are quite different. Marble has a more subtle creamy or light gray background in a variety of designs featuring colorful swirls or stripes. Granite, on the other hand, has a hard surface that can display a variety of colors, from black, white, and red to blue and green.

Different hardness

Granite is harder than marble.

Natural marble is dense but not hard, easy to process, carve, grind and polish.

Granite has a dense structure, high strength, high density, extremely low water absorption, hard texture, wear resistance, and is an acidic hard stone.

Pros and Cons

Regardless of appearance characteristics, marble and granite both have distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Marble is a relatively soft material, which makes it easy to handle during installation and polishing. Unlike granite, marble is also resistant to heat and stains and can be used in wet or humid environments. However, due to its soft nature, marble tends to require regular maintenance and polishing.

Granite is very durable and resistant to scratches and other damage. Plus, it’s easy to clean and heat-resistant, so it can be used in high-traffic areas. The main disadvantage of granite is its price. It is more expensive than marble in most cases.

Use

Marble and granite are commonly used in a variety of decorative architectural applications.

Also because of the characteristics of marble, marble is generally used for decorative surfaces such as walls, cylinders, floors that do not touch acid, railings, window sills, service desks, stair steps, elevator rooms, door faces, etc. in the interior of buildings. Made into handicrafts, murals and reliefs.

Granite is an igneous rock with a fully crystalline structure. It is an acidic rock and a hard stone. Granite has a unique decorative effect, hard and dense stone, high compressive strength, low water absorption, acid resistance, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, frost resistance, and durability.

Granite is hard and difficult to mine, brittle, and has poor refractoriness. Some granite has radioactive elements that are harmful to the body. According to the characteristics of granite, granite is mainly used as building interior and exterior finishing materials and important large-scale building foundations, steps, railings, embankments, bridges, pavements, curbstones, urban sculptures, nameplates, monuments, roller skating rink ground, etc.

Cost Considerations

The cost of marble and granite varies widely, depending on the type, grade, and amount of labor required for installation. Generally speaking, marble is more expensive than granite. However, the price of marble can vary greatly depending on its grade and design. For intricate designs, it can be more expensive than granite. Granite, on the other hand, tends to be relatively stable in cost, depending on its color and available supply.

In conclusion

Both marble and granite are popular building materials with unique and attractive properties. While marble is softer and more refined than granite, it is also more heat and stain resistant. As far as their uses are concerned, both materials can be used in both indoor and outdoor applications, including floors, countertops and bathrooms. Ultimately, however, the cost of the material can be the deciding factor when choosing between marble and granite.
